Production-Front cover Screen grabs

Here I am using the outer glow effect on photoshop to add an
ouline to my title. I experimented with colours and effects until
I found one which I was happy with.

This is me using the polygon lassoo tool on photoshop
to cut out an image of my band members which will be a
smaller image on my front cover. The polygon lassoo tool
increased my accuracy and neatness to give more of a
professional finish.

This is the polygon lassoo tool
which I used

Here I have cut out my main image in the same way that I cut
out the image of my band. I have dragged all of the pictures into
my magazine and also added a small amount of text and my barcode.

Next, I added a background to my front cover, I chose a grey colour
at first but I changed it later in the productuion process.

In this image I added a brick wall as my background and also
added some wooden flooring to the bottom of my magazine.
I made teh wall darker with an inner glow. So that it fitted
better with my colour scheme.

Next, I added my coverlines using the text tool and I also added
a 'free' bar at the bottom using the box tool and I gave this an
outer glow to make it stand out. I used the circle tool to draw a
circle to put my 1st issue information inside. At trhis point I also
changed my colour scheme, as red seemed more appropriate for
my genre. I also drew boxes with the intention to put text inside
the boxes on the right hand side.

Here I added a box with a coverline about 2011 festivals. I used
the box tool to draw my box then the text tool to add text inside
the box. I used different sized fonts and different colours so that
certain words stood out

Production Article

As I enter the squashed room, the aroma of used leather beanbags and musky retro furniture greets me. It seems an unusual place for a band to practice, but I’m convinced that once speaking to The Palominos I will understand why they would not be suited to a better place, and if I do say so myself, the dull, dim and quite frankly deathly hole-does feel strangely cozy for a bands first major interview. Would be nice if they would have had a few tea and biscuits or a ‘Gin and Tonic’ or two at the ready.
The Palominos are your very own, and slightly better established ‘the band next door’ kind of group. They come across as vey friendly and completely unchanged by their popularity. Their music lies somewhere between rock and indie- following and supporting many indie bands but not quite losing grasp of their love for 80’s rock. The band have played in a large variety of venues stretching up and down the country, visiting small pubs and also larger venues such as Liverpool’s Carling Academy. The band maintains and appreciates their fan base and continues to create new songs solely through a love of music and close friendship. Currently, the band is battling through a few ‘minor’ issues, with the lack of a lead singer, but Barry-on lead guitar, Ugo- on bass and Connor- on drums are eager to not let this put them off. I thought it would be a touchy subject, resulting in me asking very few questions about the lack of –in my eyes- the most important member of most groups, and see this upcoming band for what they are.

If you were an animal which one would you be and why?
B: We've been asked this before on a radio show and I’ve said cheeky Belmont fox-Connor said a frog [At this point the band bursts into laughter. Leaving me to assume that it is some kind of personal joke. When I asked, they weren’t open for discussion]

Who are your major influences in music and why?
It’s a lot to do with 60's and 70's rock and roll like the British rock band Zeppelin and erm there’s a lot of American influences in there as well.

Do you have a record contract? Or are you interested in getting one?
Well we haven’t got one but we are interested in getting one (So if any readers are reading and want to offer you one...) yeah yeah yeah

Could you ever see yourself on the x factor?
[Awkward Pause] No! (Why?) We do our own stuff we are not interested in doing covers or anything.

How do you feel about shows like the x factor, which take fresh talent and get as much money out of it as they can?
The thing about the x factor is- there is talent out there but it sometimes doesn’t take into account that it is a hard job, and it is very hard to make money out of. It’s a bit of an unreal world really but that’s not to take away from the fact that there are good people out there.

So, you're an upcoming band, how do you feel about the music industries nowadays?
(U: Is that your phone?) (C: Sorry yeah) B: It's quite... we probably are more interested in things like in America really where you get an album deal and they are more interested in developing you after a few albums. It's a bit more based on short term in England. U: It's more commercialized, the hits are there and then.

How do you promote yourselves? Do you have a website?
B: Yeah we've got a website (what is that website?) www.thepalaminoes.co.uk and we've got MySpace and promoters as well. (Who are the promoters?) glasswork

Do you tweet?
C: We do yeah! It opens up a lot of interest for more people not just on MySpace and Facebook and places like that, so yeah.

Do you think your home environment has shaped you as a band?
B: Yeah because we're not from Liverpool, we are from different parts of Cheshire really, Connor is from the Manchester end of Cheshire, and we're from the Merseyside end so we're not proper ‘mancunions’ or ‘scousers’ or anything so we're a bit outside.

You've been accused of jumping on the bandwagon of other local bands such as The Wombats, how do you feel about this?
U: We have been?! [Laughs] We were going before the Wombats! B: We taught them all they know! [Howls of laughter probably attracted passers by, the band were clearly highly amused by such rumors.]

For any readers who aren’t sure who you are, what genre would you describe your music?
B: It's rock but we play and support a lot of indie bands so its not, you know, its kind of half indie half rock, we do a lot of indie shows. [Simple-honestly.]

Have you got a fan base together yet?
C: Yeah we do we’ve got erm… a lot of the same faces coming back time and time again and not only to the Liverpool gigs we see a lot of the same faces coming back to a lot of the gigs. We see the same people from a lot of the gigs from around the places we've done from Birmingham and up towards Newcastle. The thing is, we're not a pop band so we don’t get hundreds and hundreds of people every time but people will come and see us who like our style of music.

Is there a band that you aspire to be like?
Yeah well there’s the likes of the bigger bands, we obviously aspire to be like them. Like Led Zeppelin, Kings of Leon, White Crows, White Stripes, long-lived bands with die hard fan bases.

How do you feel about handpicked bands? Or should bands be formed through a love of music and friendship?
Yeah they should be. (So you’re close friends?) Well yeah, we went to primary school together but then different high schools.

What inspires you to write your lyrics? Do they have much meaning?
They do have meaning but it only comes out afterwards just... usually it starts out as nonsense but it means something later on. (Who writes most of the songs?) B: me

What is your favorite memory as a band?
Its tough because we’ve been together a long time and done lots of things that we wouldn’t normally have done if we wouldn’t have been a band in the first place, its been a lot of fun from the start U: Suppose it's the Hoosiers having less fans there than we did at the carling academy!

What is the goal in the end? Would you like to go as big as world tours or just stick to the UK?
World Tours!

Who chooses the bands outfits? Do you ever hate them?
We have a stylist (Do you?) no [Very sarcastically] we just tend to wear casual clothes.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done at a gig?
I don’t know we would really have to think about it! (Ok, ill get back to you on that one if we ever have another interview)

So, after that I’ve come to a rather unusual conclusion- that this band seems completely nuts. But that could be that extra spark that they need to really make it into the music industry. They are offering the industry their own twist on the indie genre. They certainly have the potential to make something of themselves. Just so long as they find a lead singer anyway. Maybe, I don’t know, Auditions?

Production Photographs

These are the pictures I took. I intended to have The Palominos on the front cover, but after taking a few pictures I realised they would not be suitable for the front cover therefore I will take further pictures to go on my front cover. I can use the pictures that I took on my double page spread.

The band also shown me the merchandise that they have, I took pictures of these things too:

Here are the pictures of the record which I will use on my contents page.

Here is a print screen of the photograph that I edited, I cut out the band members and removed wrinkles and added hair to give them a younger look:

Here is a video of me directing the band to take pictures.

These are the further pictures which I took. I used a model and directed him to do poses similar to other magazines that I had researched. I used the top image as the main image of my magaine front cover.

Article Research

I am going to interview the palaminoes, therefore I will have to come up with question. For my research I am going to take the questions from an interview in Q magazine on Elvis Costello. There is a small introduction telling you about the history of the artist and where he came from. It also tells you what the artiost was wearing and when he was born. It also say how he looked younger than most people his age. It tells you about his wife and children. It then talks about his new album. There are quotes throughout the introduction. The questions which have been asked have been sent in by readers of the magazine. The people who have sent in the questions and have had one of their questions published get their names printed on their question and also how they sent in their question, for example 'via email'. The questions that are asked are:

  1. "Long as constable's truncheon". "enjoying the lay of the land", "try to jump you're borderd"; the lyrics of your new album, National Ransom, are littered with double entendres. Have you been indulging in your inner Carry On... film?
  2. What do you miss about England, and what's the worst thing about living abroad?
  3. As a rock star, it must have been easy getting other rock stars to guest on your TV chat show Spectacle: Elvis Costello With...?
  4. There might be a vacancy for a "music and chat" show host at the BBC, now that Jonathon Ross has been let go. Do you fancy giving it a go?
  5. Spectacular Spinning Songbook A good idea that got the audience going, or a disaster.
  6. Your appearance opn Frasier in 2003, where you talked in a cockney accent and sanf Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. What was with the Dick Van Dyke accent?Do you ever get the urge to dance the way you did in the video for [1980 Top 5 single] I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down? Because I love it...
  7. My ex-wife used to call Almost Blue "sad git music". But I loved it. Who was right?
  8. Was there anything that you really wanted to ask Bill Clinton when he was a guest on Spectacle, but couldn't, because, well, he's Bill Clinton?
  9. You wrote a whole album, 1993's Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears, for Transvision Vamp's Wendy James. When was the last time you saw her?
  10. What was more embarresing: your appearance on The Simpsons in 2002 or US sitcom Two And A Half Men in 2004?
  11. Do you have fond memories of the demon heckler from your Brodsky Quartet gigat Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in 2009?
  12. You've been known to queue outside record shops on the day albums are released. Are you saddened by the way music is all digital now?
  13. I understand you're a big Ray Charles fan. So what's your favourite song by the great man?
  14. I was upset and disappointed by your decision to cancel your recent shows in Israel [Costello called off two summer concerts in Caesarea in protest over Israeli treatment of Palestinian civilians]. Have you anything more to say to this?
  15. What do you think of the film Napoleon Dynamite borrowing your pseudonym [Costello used the Napoleon Dynamite alias during teh mis- '80s]?
  16. You've made too many albums. Which is your best one?
  17. My parents named me after the song Alison. Does it bother you that your fans do this kind of thing or does it flatter you?
  18. What's the worst thing you've ever done that you wouldn't want anyone to know about?
The interview also contained one drop quote and one main image and five smaller images.

The following link contains an audio interview with the artic monkeys with general questions:

The following link contains a video interviw with The Kaiser Chiefs, about their upcoming gigs:

I now must decide if I want to interview The Palaminoes about upcoming gigs, their new album release, or a mix of all of the question. As they are not a well known band I think I will ask them a range of questions so that the readers will become more familiar with the band. The questions I will ask my band are:

  1. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?
  2. Who are your major influences in music and why?
  3. Do you have a record contract? Or are you interested in getting one?
  4. Could you ever see yourselves on the X-Factor?
  5. How do you feel about programmes like the X-Factor which take fresh talent and get the most money out of it as they can?
  6. So, you're an upcoming band, how do you feel about the music industry nowadays?
  7. How do you promote yourselves? Do you have a website?
  8. Do you tweet?
  9. Do you think your home environment has shaped you as a band?
  10. You’ve been accused of jumping on the bandwagon of other local bands such as The Wombats, how do you feel about this?
  11. For any readers who aren’t sure of who you are, what genre would you describe your music?
  12. Have you got a fan base together yet?
  13. Is there any band which you aspire to be like?
  14. Barry, as the lead singer of the band, do the other members follow your orders?
  15. How do you feel about 'hand picked bands'? Or should bands be formed through friendship and a love of music?
  16. Have you got any songs soon to be released?
  17. What inspires you to write your lyrics. Do they have much meaning?
  18. What is your favourite memory as a band?
  19. What is the best gig you have ever played and why?
  20. Do you ever receive fan mail? If so what is the strangest thing you have ever received?
  21. In your eyes, which is the best song you’ve produced?
  22. What is the goal in the end? Would you want to go as big as world tours, or just stick to the UK?
  23. Who chooses the bands outfits? Do you ever hate them?
  24. What's the craziest thing you've ever done at a gig? E.G. crowd surfing

This is an image of what I want my front cover to look like:

Planning Production

  • For the front cover images I will have the 4 band members, the lead guitarist and bass player will be holding their instruments and the lead singer and drummer will be holding a microphone and some drum sticks. the band members will be close to each other with the whole body of the lead singer showing the the other band member behind him.
  • Coverlines; The palaminoes-Exclusive Interview!, Top 100 Songs of 2010!, Free iTunes Download!, Why does it always rain at festivals?!, Plus+Alexa Chung,Mark Ronson and the kings of leon.
  • For the contents Page images I need an image of someone standing under spotlights, a picture of a vinyl record ontop of a lot of magazines or news papers.
  • For my double page spread I am going to write an interview with the palaminoes. I plan to record the interview so I can alose post that onto my blog. I would like to have an image of each bandmate on one page of my oublepage spread. The four images would fill the page and they would have a black background which would also make a frame for the images. I would like the shots to be medium close up and each band member to have their heads in a different positions.
  • This is my contents text. I wrote out an editors letter without knowing if I will use one. It will depend on which Idea for my contents page plan I use.

This is an initial sketch of my front cover. It will also include my tagline, issue date and barcode.
I have two ideas for my contents page. One is a more original layout (the second on this page) and the first one is more regularly seen. I will start the basics of both ideas and then choose which one will be my final decision.

These are the final drafts of my sketches:
I chose the more original idea for my contents page:
